To keep things quick and simple I used the pattern on the fabric instead of creating my own applique patterns.  All you need is some fabric, iron-on interfacing, (I used Heat and Bond.) fabric scissors, and some coordinating thread.  Iron on the Heat and Bond to the back of the material following the instructions on the package.  Cut out around the shapes you’d like to use leaving about 1/8″ border around the images.  Center them on your onesie, iron on, then stitch around the edges.  Usually I’d do a zig-zag stitch, but this time I used a straight stitch so the edges would be a little frayed.  I liked the tree in the print, but created my own.  Just cut out some circles and the trunk, iron on, stitch, and you’re done!  Voila:

For this project I used some scrap fabric I had, ironed some heat and bond to the back of it, cut it out, and ironed it onto my luggage!  Now I’ll know which one is mine!  Best part?  It’s easy!

Hand draw your image onto the paper side of the heat and bond, iron it to your fabric, cut it out, and iron away!  Really it was that easy!

For each passport cover you’ll need to cut the following:

2- 12 1/2″ x 6″ pieces of fabric (I used micro-suede.  It’s easily cleanable and not too bulky!  A cotton would work well too.)

1-12 1/2″ x 6″ piece of lightweight interfacing (non-fusible)

Sew-In Colorfast InkJet Fabric Sheets for your printer (You can find these in the sewing section of any craft/hobby store.)

Coordinating thread

Your choice of which download you’ll be using for the front and back!

I’ve got the artwork download available in 2 different patterns with a total of 4 different colorways.  Hopefully there’s something for everyone!  One design has artwork with “Hello” in different languages on the front and an airplane design on the back.  The other design has an airplane pattern on the front with the text “Are we there yet?” and the text “How about now?” on the back.  (Click on the image below to download the PDF.)

First you’ll want to do a test print on a normal piece of computer paper.

This is just to make sure you’ve got everything right before you print something wrong on the fabric sheets.  I loved how these printed so nicely!  You can hardly notice a difference between the fabric and paper printout!

After they print, you’ll need to follow the instructions on the package to heat set the image.  It was a really simple process that took no longer than 5 minutes.  It involved heat setting the image, rinsing the image, patting dry the image, and re-ironing to dry and heat set the image.  Below you can see one dry fabric sheet (on the left) and one wet fabric sheet (on the right).

It warns you to pat dry, and not to rub so I thought I’d give it a rub just to see what happens.  Turns out it’s very easy to rub and blur the image when it’s being rinsed the first time.  See where I rubbed the word Schlosser?  It definitely got blurry quickly!  (It’s permanent and won’t blur after the final dry and heat set,  don’t worry!)

You’ll trim the front and back along the crop lines on the printout.  Layout the front and back printout pieces according to the measurements below on your front main fabric piece:

(To find the middle, just fold the larger piece in half and crease with your finger.)

Stitch 1/8″ around the edge of the pieces.

Layer the two fabric pieces right sides together with the interfacing on top.  Stitch 1/4″ around the pieces, leaving a 2-3″ opening along the short side.  Clip the corners and turn right side out.  Iron the opening and top stitch along both short sides.  (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of this step!)  Fold ends in 2 1/2″, pin, and top stitch 1/8″ along the long sides to sew the pockets down.

Add your passport and you’re ready for some stylish travel!!

The colorways I made go with lots of different fabric colors so you can mix and match to your hearts content!  (They’ll also make great card fronts.)

Here’s how to make your own super cute ric rac accent pillow:

Materials:

-2 fat quarters of fabric (one for the front and one for the back of the pillow)  I’d choose a solid for the front because your ric rac is going to provide enough pattern on it’s own!

-2 yards each of 3-4 different colors and widths of ric rac

-Aleene’s Fabric Fusion glue

-poly fill stuffing

Cut the front and back piece of your fabric to be 15″ x 20″.  Fold your ric rac in thirds and cut into 3 pieces.  Layout the ric rac pieces on the fabric that will be the top of your pillow.

When you have them laid out how you like them, just pin it all down.  You’ll use a lot of pins!

If you’re having trouble with the smaller teeny tin ric rac just pin it like this.  Use the pin on either side to make a little channel to pin it down in.  See how the little purple ric rac is being held down, but not actually pierced with the pin?

Now that you’ve gotten it all laid out, grab this fabulous glue from Duncan and start gluing down all your ric rac.  I did try sewing all this at first.  I wanted to use my clear thread, but my machine hated sewing with it and so the glue ended up working even better than sewing all of it!

You’ll end up with some hanging off the sides and that’s quite alright!  After we sew on the back we’ll trim it all up!

Place your back fabric face down on the front of your pillow and pin around the edges.  Sew around the edges, leaving about 4″ open along the bottom center of the pillow.

Trim off the extra ric rac that was hanging off the edge once you’ve finished sewing.

Don’t forget to trim your corners before you turn the pillow right side out!

Stuff it as full as you want and hand stitch around the opening you left.  Enjoy you’re new accent pillow!

I used some nice spring colors but wouldn’t it be cool to switch up the colors for say St. Patrick’s Day or July 4th?

Or if you don’t need a pillow, just forgo the stuffing all together and make an awesome place mat!!

You know I love to keep my projects super simple so here’s what you need:

-1 Placemat (or as many as you need for all your guests)  I found my place-mat at Target for $2.99.  You can find plain place mats just about anywhere!
-1 skein each DMC Embroidery Floss in green and orange (I used Orange DMC 3853 and Green DMC 3020)
sewing needle, transfer pen (I like the kind that disappears on it’s own!  It’s awesome!)

Transfer the image onto the lower right corner of your place mat (leave about 2″ on the right and bottom) and hand stitch the design.  I used the back stitch, and a french knot for the dot on the i.  You’re finished.  Really, it’s that easy!  If you’re super ambitious or can’t find any place mats you like, sew your own.  Cut two rectangles 19 1/2″ x 14 1/2″.  Stitch your pattern onto the corner of the place mat, then layer the two rectangles with the right side of the stitching on the inside.  Place one rectangle of a  medium weight interfacing on top of the two rectangles.  Stitch using 1/4″ seams all the way around leaving a space for turning about 3-4″ wide.  Turn the place mat right side out, hand stitch the opening shut, and you’re finished!

Here’s how I used some freezer paper to transfer the pattern to his shirt:

The larger flower was made from some 1 1/2″ wide satin ribbon.  I LOVE how it turned out!  I added a fancy brad in the middle for a little accented touch.  What do you think?  I’m thinking they would also make great hair clips, brooches, or embellishments on a little handbag!
